“If experimenting with the processing and surfaces of photographic prints seems like a relic in the digital age, it’s far from it. If anything, today’s predominance of screen-only interaction has made the importance of the photo as object more beguiling to both emerging and established photographers.” – Lori Fredrickson from American Photo. Read more about this series here.

More than anything, [New York] is such an endlessly interesting city. Person to person, people put on so many layers of artifice and armor. They’re so consciously prepared for the world. Inevitably there are moments when all of that becomes transparent and they’re just a shitty, honest, basic version of themselves no matter how dressed up or guarded they are. I think that’s what keeps me looking. – Daniel Arnold from this interview.

I travel, navigate, through virtual space and I look for things that will support an idea I have. I make screenshots or download images and crop them in specific ways for what I am looking for. I frame the virtual world the way I want to see it. This is what a photographer does, frames and edits the world in the way that she sees it. So, at one point, I decided not to make a distinction between my practice and traditional photographic practice.  – Penelope Umbrico from here.

…Let me call out to and ask the birds flying about in the sky
I want to convey to them my feelings
Over many long years, with art as a weapon
I have treaded the path in search of love
During the days I have lived through keeping “despair”, “emptiness” and “loneliness” all to myself along the way
there were times when the fireworks of life “splendidly” adorned the sky
Dancing in the night sky in a myriad of colors, the fireworks sprinkled dust all over my body
I will never forget that exhilarating moment
Now I think is the time to dedicate my heart to you, my dearest…

– excerpt by Yayoi Kusama, Residing in a Castle of Shed Tears
which accompanies Kusama’s I Who Have Arrived in Heaven exhibition now on view at David Zwirner Gallery.
