I love contemporary art auction week not just for all the excitement the sales generate among every realm of the art world but because the auctions give a chance to see rare works that have been hidden away for years in private collections. Perhaps these works will go right back to a private owner after the auction, but for these few weeks it’s nice to see such a wide variety of art in one easy to look through space. Here are some of my picks from Sotheby’s Contemporary sale tomorrow night.
Gerhard Richter, Betty, oil on canvas 1988.
This painting was given to me today in the form of a farewell postcard from one of my bosses at SMOCA. I thought it was beautiful and love Gerhard Richter. Today was my last day as a curatorial intern and I cannot even begin to express how truly wonderful the last year has been there. So I guess i’ll just borrow a quote from good ol’ Gerhard, though I am positive in context, he is referring to painting.
The tough part is always at the end. The beginning is always easy.
